Scaling- Most important part of your cleaning is scaling. Scaling and root planing is the removal of all calculus and plaque build up on your teeth. These build ups are caused by harmful bacteria and cause acute and chronic inflammation reactions that interact with your systemic health. Each individual will require a different amount of scaling which will depend on home care, diet, time since last cleaning, saliva pH, etc. During your initial appointment we will not go over 1.5 hours of scaling and if more is needed that will be discussed at that appointment.
Polish- Polishing is the removal of plaque and staining of your teeth. It also smooths out the teeth making scaling last longer by smoothing out the teeth and making it harder for bacteria to re-adhere to the tooth surfaces.
Fluoride- Fluoride is a negative ion that attracts calcium to the teeth which then builds a new-stronger-than-the-original calcium structure. This prevents cavities, can treat sensitivity and can reverse incipient decay (not broken through the enamel into the dentin).
Anti-microbial agents- If any suspected decay is found the first and most important step is a referral to a dentist. However, we can apply an anti-microbial agent, silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to help slow the cavity growth. This does not stop or treat the decay and it will need to be treated by a dentist.
Whitening- We have take home whitening kits that allow for gradual whitening and decreases risk of sensitivity. Prior to whitening your teeth will need to be recently scaled, screened for decay and health history discussed. A contraindication for whitening is active smoking as whitening and smoking at the same time can cause irreversible tooth discoloration.
Desensitizing agents- We have in office, fluoride and take home desensitizing agents. Discuss with your hygienist which option is best for you.
