Children’s dental care tips

As a parent, you want to give your children the best possible start in life, and that includes taking care of their oral health. Good dental and home care habits can help prevent cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems in infants, toddlers, children, and teens. Here are some tips on dental and home care for children of all ages:

Infants:

  • Begin cleaning your baby’s mouth and gums with a soft, damp cloth or gauze pad after each feeding.
  • Do not put your baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice, as this can lead to bottle rot and tooth decay.
  • Schedule your baby’s first dental appointment by their first birthday.

Toddlers:

  • Brush your toddler’s teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Supervise your toddler’s brushing to ensure they do not swallow toothpaste or brush too hard.
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks, and encourage your toddler to drink water.

Children:

  • Continue to supervise your child’s brushing until they are able to brush effectively on their own, typically around age 7 or 8.
  • Floss your child’s teeth once a day to remove plaque from between the teeth.
  • Consider sealants to protect your child’s molars from decay.

Teens:

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and floss once a day.
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks, and avoid tobacco products.
  • Wear a mouthguard when playing sports to protect teeth from injury.

Home care for all ages:

  • Use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Brush for two minutes, focusing on all surfaces of the teeth and tongue.
  • Floss daily to remove plaque from between the teeth.
  • Use mouthwash as directed by your dentist or dental hygienist.
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and calcium.
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks.

Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are also important for maintaining good oral health. Your dentist or dental hygienist can provide personalized advice on dental and home care for your child based on their individual needs. By encouraging good oral health habits from an early age, you can help your child maintain a healthy smile for life.
