Being Committed to Cultural Safety: My Journey as a Métis Dental Hygienist

As a Métis dental hygienist, I understand the importance of cultural safety in healthcare. It’s not just about knowing the customs and traditions of Indigenous communities, but also understanding and respecting the diversity of cultures and backgrounds that our patients come from. Cultural safety means providing a safe and respectful environment for everyone, regardless of their cultural identity.

In my practice, I am committed to providing culturally safe care for all my patients. I have extensive experience providing dental hygiene services within First Nations communities, and I am always looking to learn more about Indigenous culture and traditions. I believe that cultural safety is not just about knowledge, but also about building relationships and trust with patients.

As a Métis person, I have a personal connection to Indigenous culture and traditions. I understand the challenges faced by Indigenous communities and the importance of cultural safety in healthcare. I strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all my patients, regardless of their cultural identity.

But cultural safety is not just about Indigenous communities. It’s about creating a safe and inclusive environment for all patients, regardless of their cultural background. I make an effort to learn about different cultures and traditions so that I can provide culturally safe care to everyone who walks through my door.

To keep myself educated and learning, I am a member of a group called Culturally Committed. Through monthly meetings, we learn from leaders in the Indigenous community about cultural safety and best practices for providing care to Indigenous patients. This group has been an invaluable resource for me as I continue to grow and develop as a culturally safe healthcare provider.

In conclusion, cultural safety is an essential aspect of healthcare that requires ongoing learning, understanding, and respect for diversity. As a Métis dental hygienist, I am committed to providing culturally safe care to all my patients and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone who walks through my door.
